Rowan
3' x 3' Green Isle on Irish Zwartbles hand tufted Irish wool tapestry or floor mat in stock in New York City and Dublin. Made to order with lead time of 10-14 weeks.
The OM Series is a carpet & tapestry collection Inspired by an ancient Irish "tree alphabet" and a customizable design series that can spell almost any word. Each character of this ancient alphabet was linked to species of tree native to Ireland, many of which were considered sacred but have all but disappeared from Ireland’s landscape today.
The Rowan was reputedly the tree of the Druids and one that symbolized protection, particularly against witches and enchantment. It is often found near stone circles or ancient burial sites, as it was believed by the Druids to protect the spirits of the dead.
Used mainly to write the early Irish language Ogham is known for monumental inscriptions on standing stones. Its history dates back to at least the third or fourth century A.D, placing it in use long before the arrival of Latin to Ireland. Also called the tree alphabet, some believe it was created by druids and scholars as a secret form of communication.
“The early Celts venerated certain trees across Europe and we share their fascination with the ancient Irish sigils of Ogham. We like to imagine this tree alphabet brings one closer to the natural world while also creating a rug or tapestry design that can spell just about any word”
